Zhangjiakou, situated in northwest Hebei Province, covers an area of 36, 947 square kilometers. It connects the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region to the north with neighboring Datong, a coal base, to the west and with Beijing, 199 kilometers to the southeast. It administers 13 counties and regions with a population of 4.3 million.

Zhangjiakou is a communication pivot linking Beijing, Shanxi Province, Hebei Province and the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. The Beijing-Baotou and Datong-Beijing railways cross the city proper. With the city as a hub, 4 national highways and 8 provincial-level highways radiate in all directions. A 50,000 program-controlled telephone has been put into operation, providing direct calls to everywhere in China and over 130 countries and cities in the world.

Energy is the foundation of Zhangjiakou's industrial economy. The Zhangjiakou General Power Plant, with an installed capacity of 2.88 million kw, is one of the largest thermal power plants in north China. Zhangjiakou's industrial system includes machinery, metallurgy, chemicals, light and textile industries, coal, building material, leather, fur, brewing and foodstuffs.

Zhangjiakou has rich resources. It has 11 large geological mineral deposits and over 1,200 mineralizing centers. The deposits of gold, coal, lead, zinc, phosphorus and five other minerals rank first in the province. The north Zhangjiakou horse, red grassland ox and Hebei fine wool are known all over China. There are many kinds of wild plants including mountain hazel, wild jujube and sea buckhorn.

city view Zhangjiakou has unique topography. It is located at the juncture of the Hengshan Mountain, Taihang Mountains and Yanshan Mountain. The Sanggan River flows through the whole area. The northern part is surrounded by plateaus, forming beautiful natural scenery. In summer its average temperature is 23.2 degrees centigrade and it is a summer resort.
