Jazz giants and boy band
ready to roll
China's top tenor will hold a solo concert at the
Century Theater on February 19, the first lantern festival of 2000. Worran Mok's solo
concert consists of two parts: episodes of world-famous operas including Carmen and
Turandot, and Chinese songs including "Sea, My Hometown", "It is I"
and "Late Fall Leaves", the latter a song especially created for him by composer
Gu Jianfen.
Born in Beijing, Mok finished his studies in the
USA, and began his opera career in Germany. In 1997, he was invited to act the leading
role in the Turandot and has since enjoyed great popularity in China.
1999 was Mok's busiest year. He attended the
"Spring Festival Evening" on CCTV, the theatrical festival of the celebration of
the 50th Anniversary of China, the concert to celebrate the return of Macao, and performed
in Carmen at the second Beijing International Music Festival.

Pop star Zang Tianshuo will hold a
solo concert at Beijing Exhibition Center Theater on February 11.
Following a successful first album "My 10
Years", Zang released a second "Manifest Myself".
Zang and his band will present his first big hit
"Friends" and songs in his new album at the forthcoming concert.

Jazz Dream Team
T he Dream Team of Jazz, part of the Lincoln Center Jazz
Orchestra (LCJO) will visit China and share the Ellington-characteristic soul of jazz with
Chinese jazz lovers under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, the most acclaimed
composer-trumpeter in the world today.
LCJO is the most important American jazz band, whose
former composer is American's most esteemed jazz musician Duke Ellington.
During the 1998-1999 season, the orchestra's
relentless touring schedule included concerts and educational programs in more than 100
cities throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Russia, in collaboration with
some of the world's finest symphony orchestras like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
Russian National Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Wynton Marsalis is central to the jazz of the world
today, the most accomplished and acclaimed jazz artist and composer of his generation. His
more than 40 outstanding jazz and classical recordings have won him eight Grammy Awards
and he is also the first jazz artist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music.

911, a successful British boy group,
will come to Beijing after conquering Europe and Southeast Asia.
Their songs,
"Party People-Friday Night" and "Bodyshaking" have been well received

Beirozka
The Russian State Folk Dance Company will perform
their national dances, festival dances and four girls' dances for Spring
Festival.
Beirozka will also present choruses including "Moscow
Night" so familiar to Chinese people.
Beirozka was established in 1948 in Moscow,
consisting of more than 60 people. It has toured 90 countries over the past 50 years. In
1955, Chairman Mao Zedong saw their performance and met with all the performers.
Most of their performances are drawn from Russian
folklores and combined with classical dance art.
